At Elgin Community College (ECC), on-the-road training is the heart of the Truck Driving Program—this is where classroom learning comes to life. Students gain real-world experience through two key training areas:
Behind-the-wheel training (50 hours) – Hands-on driving experience on the road.
Skills lot training (170 hours) – Practice in a controlled environment to master essential driving techniques.
To participate in ECC’s Truck Driving Program, you must:
Apply to ECC to obtain an ECC student ID number.
Request instructor consent to join the program using the ECC Truck Driving Program Instructor Consent Request Form.
Be at least 18 years old.
Have a valid Illinois driver’s license.
After registering, pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) drug test and physical exam, which are required for all commercial vehicle drivers. These exams ensure you meet federal safety and health standards.
Enroll in and complete the following required courses to finish the program:
BRG 101 – Truck Driver Training I
BRG 201 – Truck Driver Training II
BRG 202 – Truck Driver Training III
The DOT also requires mandatory drug and alcohol testing for students in the truck driving program at specific times and under specific conditions.
This combination of classroom instruction, hands-on skills training, and federal safety compliance ensures that ECC graduates are fully prepared for successful, professional driving careers.
