Can you help me decide what to study?270 views

You're not alone in being uncertain about what you want to study at ECC. Did you know that over 60 percent of students attending a community college are still deciding on their program of study? Choosing what you want to study is a big decision; talking with someone trained to help you discover your major/career direction can be helpful. We want to share a few resources with you that will help you decide about a program of study at ECC or beyond.

  1. Undecided? Discover what you want to get out of your future career and how you can explore yourself and the world of work to choose the right career path.
  2. Seeking employment? Whether your goal is a part-time job while in school or your career position, learn how to stand out to employers.
  3. Want career success? Create your professional “brand,” and uncover opportunities to build your competencies, experiences, and relationships.

The Career Assessment Package (CAP) creates a comprehensive career development picture. You'll have two one-on-one career advising sessions to review the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) results and the Strong Interest Inventory®, the most widely used psychological assessments. With CAP, you’ll gain insight into your unique personality, interests, and values. If you have questions or want to purchase a Career Assessment Package, call 847-214-7390 or email careerservices@elgin.edu.

If you are still deciding, we recommend following the Associate in Arts degree's educational plan for selecting courses in your first semester. We suggest this option because it is our most flexible program of study. This plan is designed for eventual transfer to a 4-year college or university. However, after starting in this area, you can change it next semester if you determine it is not your best choice. When you meet to create your educational plan, discussing your plans with your ECC academic advisor is always important.
